SAFARI LEATHER CREATIONS

How many is too many?

When considering how much ammunition you want to carry on you belt during a hunt, ask yourself, realistically how many rounds are you going to fire before the opportunity arises for you to top up again.  You must bare in mind that chances are you will have a fully loaded rifle, containing three or four rounds as well.  If you are on a cull hunt for plains game in Africa you may have the opportunity to shoot several animals in a single day, conversely if you are trophy hunting you might not pull the trigger at all during a days hunting.  There is of course the rare occasion when things go badly and it takes several shots to kill the animal.

When taking all this into consideration six rounds on your belt with a fully loaded rife is for 99.9% of the time going to be enough.  But does that give you peace of mind, well if not my advise would be go for an eight round ammunition slide, ten can start to feel heavy after a long day of walking under a hot sun, while eight will be shorter, lighter and more comfortable to wear.  If you are still not convinced just drop a couple of spare emergency rounds in your pocket.

Here are a couple of eight round slides I made recently, both in 375HH.

KNIFE POUCHES

It seems even knife pouches are like busses!  I was asked to make a couple of pouches to take a Buck folding knife, the only difference being one was to be dyed tan and the other dark Havana.

Just a couple of days after I had posted them to the customer I had another enquiry, as luck should have it, the tooling I made for the first two was suitable for the new order, the only difference being the pouch had to be longer to house the new customer folding knife.

Wet forming the knife pouch in tooling I made for the job.

EXOTIC LEATHER POUCHES

I was asked if I could make a ten round belt slide in 308 Win and a matching folding knife pouch, and could I make them from some elephant leather that my customer had from a previous safari.  Ordinarily this would not have been a problem, but the elephant leather that my customer had was very thin and very soft, almost like chammy leather.

I took on the project, but made no promises as to weather I could use the elephant leather.  I knew I would have to glue the elephant leather to some cows leather to give it some rigidity, so this is where I started.  Over a period of time I found the best way to utilise the elephant leather and after formulating a design and making tooling for both the knife pouch and the slide, this is what I came up with.

I think you will agree that the finished products look pretty good, I have also made a belt to go with the pouches, but this had to be made from cows leather as the elephant leather had a tendency to delaminate on the edges, even if glued and stitched.
